Yun Fu, a smart Tibetan restaurant on Wyndham Street, is definitely one of the most visually stunning restaurants in Hong Kong. The entrance is a through a heavy wooden door and down a staircase lined with stone statues. The restaurant itself is crammed full with red lanterns and dark wood, the atmosphere accentuated by the lack of natural light. It's not a cheap experience but for a special occasion, it is a memorable experience.
The reason for our visit was that it was E.'s first birthday in Hong Kong. As it seems that she knows half of Hong Kong, we had the set banqueting meal. Full marks has to go to the service which was extremely competent and smooth. Despite the size of the party, our wine glasses were never empty and the waiters seemed really well-informed when I asked questions.
We started with sliced pork cheek roulade and hand shredded duck with bean curd paper. After hating the sliced pork with Chinese wine at Shui Hu Ju, I was a little sceptical of the roulade when it arrived but it actually tasted really good. It was quite plain ("unadorned" according to J.), as was the also excellent shredded duck. You really tasted the individual ingredients which, frankly, is not something I've experienced a lot of in Hong Kong. The next course involved roasted chicken fillets wrapped with mushrooms and Yun Nan Ham, and spicy cabbage spring rolls. Both were great, not too greasy at all.
The main courses were quite varied - deep-fried king prawns rounded with golden egg white, braised veal shank wrapped with lotus leaves, double happiness fire roasted wild boar and mandarin fish topped with black olive paste. The wild boar was presented in a dramatic fashion, being brought into the room in a large metal container with flames shooting out of it. The veal shank and mandarin fish were particularly good, the veal being very tender and the mandarin fish most flavoursome.
The only thing that let the meal down was the sweet dim sum desert which only S. managed to finish (despite claims he didn't actually enjoy it!). The items on the plate were seriously uninspired, even by Chinese pudding standards, and I have to say that I really didn't like any of them.
Sweet dim sum aside, the food was of a very high standard, the dishes were interesting and well-presented and the service excellent. The interior design was the icing on the cake and although the cost prevents it becoming a regular experience, it's somewhere I'd definitely like to go back to!
